Historical Background
At the inception of the fund, the Bridgetown and Area Community Fund was awarded two special grants from the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia which was required to be allocated to local non-profit organizations. The organizations were required to support the causes of individuals with transportation related costs. The BACF was able to pass along these grants to the following organizations.
In 2008/2009, Transportation Grants in the total amount of $1500 were awarded to three different organizations. They included: Annapolis County Ground Search and Rescue – $500.00 to support the purchase of a trailer to improve readiness and response times, The Bridgetown Band Parents – $500.00 to support their fundraising for a band trip to Ottawa, and Trans County Transportation Society – $500.00 to subsidize transportation to and from medical appointments for clients who could not otherwise afford the service.
In 2011/12, the Bridgetown and Area Community Fund was again awarded Transportation Grants in the amount of $2000.00. Four organizations benefited from these special grants. The Annapolis County Municipal Housing Corporation – $500.00 to transport residents of Mountain Lea Lodge, Adult Residential Centre and the Supervised Apartments within the community to access services and businesses, The Salvation Army Bridgetown Community Church – $500.00 grant for transportation to and from the Food Bank in Middleton and to provide emergency transportation to local residents living in the Greenwood to Digby area, The Canadian Mental Health Association, Annapolis County Branch – $500.00 to offer a shuttle to individuals outside of the area to attend support groups, and Carleton Road Industries Association – $500.00 grant to create an extended program offering transportation for clients to and from educational opportunities, recreational outings and work experience in the local area.
There have been several anonymous donors in the last few years who have requested their donations to be allocated to a particular organization which, no doubt, was “dear” to their hearts.
The Bridgetown Curling Club has benefited on three occasions – 2020 – $6690, 2019 – $4000 and 2018 – $4600. The curling club was very excited and pleased to receive these anonymous donations through the BACF and funds were utilized to upgrade and assist with many renovations recently undertaken. By completing these upgrades, the curling club members are able to continue to enjoy the game and greatly assist in the sustainability of the building.
The Bridgetown Lawn Bowling Club was also the recipient of two special anonymous donations that were awarded through the Bridgetown and Area Community Fund. They were awarded a total of $4000 within the last five years. Members of the club utilized these funds for much needed upgrades.
Over the past twelve years, the Bridgetown and Area Community Fund continues to donate money to many organizations within our community and surrounding areas. Local organizations have benefited from these grants issued by the Bridgetown Area Community Fund by either the income generated within the fund, businesses or individuals. Over the past few years, the BACF has been very pleased to partner with Kirk Lycett of Bridgetown Pharmacy/ V&S Variety as well as the anonymous donors and private individuals and the Board of Directors wish to thank them for their generosity of their donations which allowed the fund to generate more grants which has made a difference in the operations of many local not for profit organizations locally. By contacting one of the board members, we would gladly explain how you, too, can contribute to local organizations and receive a charitable tax receipt. Your contribution today can leave a lasting legacy for tomorrow.
